Sudden loss rocked Darlene’s world The Conners.
At the start of the second of the series’ consecutive episodes on Wednesday, Darlene discovered that her neighbor Molly Tilden (played by Roseanne veterinarian Danielle Harris) died of brain cancer. The shocking death was revealed shortly after Darlene reconnected with her teenage rival, who encouraged her to live her life to the fullest – something Molly had done since finding out she was dying . Namely, she went ahead and bought two First Class Hawaii tickets for herself and Darlene.
When asked about the decision to bring Molly back for an episode, just to kill her, showrunner Bruce Helford told TVLine, “We were really thinking about what was going to change Darlene’s life. What would have a major effect on Darlene that would have a real effect on the relationship with Ben towards the end of the season?
“Molly at the time tried to get Darlene out of her shell and took her to her first gig. So we thought it would be interesting, if they were sort of living the same life they both got married too young and they just never had their twenties and thirties, ”says Helford. “Molly comes back into her life and they become friends which is a real twist of what was going on between them.” [before]. And that something major could happen that would cause Darlene to reassess how she saw her [own] life [was] a sort of genesis of all this.
In the end, Darlene and Ben agreed to have their plane tickets reimbursed and put the money in an apartment – but Darlene seemed very reluctant when she called the airline to inquire about the reimbursement.
Helford confirms that Molly’s death catapults Darlene into a “midlife crisis” as Season 3 draws to a close. “It’s suddenly to be really aware of [her] the mortality, combined with the fact that she went out and had a good time and realized that she could let it go, ”says Helford. “She carries the burdens of the world on her [back]. Her personality doesn’t allow for many different things… It will certainly have an effect on her relationship with Ben.
Asked to clarify, Helford would only say that tensions between Darlene and Ben “are definitely going to come to a head, one way or another”, before the end of the season.
