‘Kung Fu’ recap: Olivia Liang opens up about Season 1 finale, Season 2 spoilers

Warning: this article contains spoilers from Kung Futhe season 1 finale. Read at your own risk.

Whether it is dropping a semester before graduating from university or completing a three-year training course in a monastery, Kung Fus Nicky Shen is keen to forge her own path in life.

Wednesday’s season finale saw Nicky regain control of her destiny when she decided to release Biange to earth, rather than destroy her or wield Liang Daiyu’s ancient sword. His decision apparently breaks the tumultuous cycle his family has endured for generations as direct descendants of Daiyu.

“It really feels like the circle has come full circle as this generational thing that pulls her family, Nicky can finally be the one to say, ‘No, we’re going to do something different with this'”, Olivia Liang, who plays Nicky, says TVLine. “That doesn’t mean he’s not here. That’s not to say it’s not part of us, but we don’t have to react to it or succumb to it like previous generations did. This is why she chooses to release him into the earth. She doesn’t want to get rid of it. She doesn’t want to deny that it’s part of her, but she doesn’t want to let him control them.

Kung Fu Season 1Biange’s release is a game-changer, which Nicky alluded to when she told her brother Ryan she felt different. It remains to be seen whether she meant that physically (new powers ???) or just emotionally – Kung Fu has already been renewed for Season 2 – but Liang has his own take on what Nicky meant by that.

“After everything we’ve seen her go through in Season 1, and how stubborn she is in finding Zhilan, finding the weapon, stopping Biange, it was really refreshing to see Nikki at the end say, ‘I don’t know what’s next, but I know I want to have a boba with my boyfriend, ”Liang explains. “A huge weight was taken off of her. As far as she is concerned, things will go up from here, and the threat is not imminent. I think she just feels lighter.

Nicky might be relaxed right now, but it looks like the trouble is just beginning. In the final moments of the finale, Evan revealed that Russell Tan had bought out politicians and the DEA and grabbed some top-notch real estate. Plus, he’s hiding a secret weapon that the Shens probably have no idea about: Nicky’s lost cousin, who happens to be the daughter of a Guardian Warrior and, according to Tan, is “the key to everything.” In a final twist, we saw a Biange flower peeking across the sidewalk.

“I know that Biange energy has definitely followed [Nicky] in San Francisco, ”Liange teases. “Because she is part of the warrior lineage, and siblings Shen and Mama are also part of it, I think they could get a little more involved in the magic and mythology of it all.”

Liang is not sure yet what will happen in season 2, but is hopeful that the introduction of Nicky’s unknown cousin sets up a complicated family battle in which “someone who is part of Nicky’s family must now be his. enemy”. As for other wishes for next season, she also looks forward to further exploring Nicky and Henry’s blossoming romance outside of the library.

Yvonne Chapman in Kung Fu Season 1“I don’t want to see them researching old weapons anymore,” she shares. “I want to see them have a real date that involves activity and food and they talk about some of the things Henry teases in Episode 4 about his family and background. I’m glad they have a normal relationship that doesn’t revolve around magic, guns and murderers, and fate.

As for Zhilan, who was arrested at the end of the hour, Liang hopes to see the murderous guard again with a new assignment. “I think it would be so cool to see Nicky go up against this bad person, and the only person who can help is Zhilan,” Liang recalls. “We visit her in her jail cell, and she’s still so fabulous, and she probably has some of the wards under her spell.” I think that would be really fun.

Liang’s additional hopes for Season 2 include seeing a resolution for Althea after breaking her confidentiality agreement, seeing what happens with Harmony Dumplings, exploring Ryan finding love or thriving in his career, and seeing Nicky find. a job and leave his family home.
