Benny Safdie joins Lionsgate adaptation of Are You There God? It’s me, Margaret

Acclaimed filmmaker Benny Safdie, freshly cast in the Disney + Obi wan kenobi series, joined the cast of the anticipated Lionsgate adaptation of Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret, according to Erin Westernman, president of production at Lionsgate.

Safdie will play Margaret’s father, Herb, who the book describes as a Jewish insurance salesman married to Barbara, a Christian housewife.

Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (The edge of seventeen), Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret tells the timeless coming of age story of Margaret Simon, a sixth grade student who questions everything about adolescence and puberty and searches the universe for all the answers she can find. As her mom and grandmother try to guide her through a time of change, they also find that you never stop questioning your path and defining what makes sense in your life.

The film also stars Abby Ryder Fortson, best known for her stage flight performances in Marvel’s. The ant Man series, which stars as Oscar-nominated Margaret Simon Rachel McAdams (Game night) stars as Margaret’s mother, Barbara, and Oscar winner Kathy Bates (Titanic) as Margaret’s grandmother, Sylvia.

Oscar-winning producer James L. Brooks (As good as it is) produced through its Gracie Films banner, teaming up with Craig following their collaboration on the acclaimed film The edge of seventeen. Julie Ansell, Richard Sakai, Amy Brooks, Fremon Craig and Blume will join Brooks as producers.

As mentioned above, Safdie is currently shooting the Obi wan kenobi miniseries for Disney +, but has also appeared in films such as Person to person and Pieces of a womanHe will also star in the Showtime television series. The curse with Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder. He also wrote and directed the Adam Sandler drama Uncut gems with his brother Josh; and also teamed up with his brother for the crime thriller Good time, with Robert Pattinson.
